On Wednesday, May 9th, 7 members loaded up in Engine 4-9-1 and headed to the annual Zone 4 Firemen’s Competition in Bird-In-Hand. \
\
The annual event, which has been held on the grounds behind the Bird-In-Hand Family Restaurant and Motor Inn for the past several years, (before that it was held at Pequea Valley High School for a couple of years and before that, at Paradise Township Community Park) is held as a friendly competition and a social get-together between the member Zone 4 fire companies which include the following companies:\
Hand-In-Hand Station 4-1\
Gap Station 4-2\
Gordonville Station 4-3\
Intercourse Station 4-4\
Kinzer Station 4-5\
Paradise-Leaman Place Station 4-7\
Ronks Station 4-8\
Salisbury Township Station 4-9\
Witmer Station 4-10\
\
Responsibility for setting up the year’s competition falls to 3 different companies each year. This year, Salisbury Township, Gap and Kinzer were in charge. \
\
This year’s competition involved a 6 man team. \
-One person was the team captain, and was there to give directions & support to his team. \
-Three people then had to unroll three sections of hose, and hook into the pump panel of Engine 4-9-1 (which was the supply pumper for the entire event), screw on the nozzle, and fill a barrel with water, until the barrel ran over, and the rubber duckies in the barrel fell out.\
-The remaining two people had to don an air pack, wait for the hosemen to finish their task, crawl on their hands and knees with a raw egg in a large spoon between a set of cones for a set distance, and then they could get on their feet and walk back to the beginning of the course, making sure not to drop the egg.\
\
When it was all said and done, the Intercourse Fire Company was declared the overall winners. Salisbury Township placed fourth. A good time was had by all in attendance.\
\
There were also apparatus on display from Zone 4 and other area fire companies for everyone to look at.\
\
Our Ladies Auxiliary was also in attendance with their food trailer, providing food and drink to the firefighters and public. Thank you to the ladies for providing this service!\
