Fifty years ago, on March 10, 1958, at the monthly meeting of the Salisbury Township Fire Company #1, it was decided to better service the community’s sick and injured residents and visitors, and start up ambulance service by a vote of 15 yes, 13 no.\
\
The first ambulance is purchased from the Honey Brook Fire Company for $250.00. Ironically, the ambulance, a 1948 Chevrolet, was Honey Brook’s first ambulance. The first call for the newly formed White Horse Ambulance would come two months later on May 15, 1958 for a heart problem.\
\
In that first year of service, 1958, the ambulance had 16 calls for service. Last year, in 2007, the ambulance had 470 calls for service. Calls for service have steadily increased: first breaking 100 calls in 1977; breaking 200 calls in 1982, breaking 300 calls in 1997, and breaking 400 calls in 2001.\
\
We are one of the last remaining ambulance squads in Lancaster & Chester Counties that remain staffed by a 100% VOLUNTEER crew 24 hours a day, seven days a week.\
\
Below are all the ambulances that have called White Horse home, in order of service.\
