Township fill site inspections and testing

On the evening of Monday, June 27, members loaded up in Engine 4-9-1 and traveled to different fill sites in our first due section of Salisbury Township.\
\
Due to our section of Salisbury Township having no public water supply with fire hydrants, in the event of a fire, water must be obtained from creeks, ponds and cisterns close to the fire scene. In order to facilitate easy use of the sites in an emergency, each site is occasionally inspected and pumped.\
\
Upon arrival this evening at each fill site, condition of the fill site was inspected and the best access to the fill site was checked.\
\
Fill sites checked:\
-Umble’s Run on Hershey Church Road at Old Philadelphia Pike,\
-Pond on Peters Road at Springville Road in the village of Springville,\
-Pond on Red Hill Road at Meadville Road,\
-Pequea Creek on Wanner Road at Jacobs Road,\
-Indian Spring on Cains Road at Old Mill Road.\
\
With the exception of the Peters Road pond, a draft was set up at each site, and water was flowed through Engine 4-9-1’s deluge gun and front discharge for several minutes to test if the water source could sustain pumping large volumes of water with no performance deficits. All sites easily passed with excellent flows. The Peters Road pond was not pumped due to a temporary, but easily remedied, access issue that will be discussed with the property owner to see if easier access than previously used in the past could be obtained.\
\
Thanks to all the fire fighters and fire police who turned out to assist with the evenings inspections.
