Ambulance recieves monitoring equipment

Recently, the White Horse Ambulance received two new pieces of monitoring equipment.\
\
Thanks to the Lancaster County Emergency Medical Services Council, and the South Central Pennsylvania Counter-Terrorism Task Force, we were issued a Carbon Monoxide Detector, and a Radiation Dosimeter.\
\
The carbon monoxide detector will utilized to measure the levels of carbon monoxide on incident scenes. \
\
Carbon Monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that interferes with the delivery of oxygen in the blood to the rest of the body. Depending on the amount inhaled, this gas can impede coordination, worsen cardiovascular conditions, and produce fatigue, headache, weakness, confusion, disorientation, nausea, and dizziness. Very high levels can cause death. Carbon monoxide is produced as a result of incomplete burning of carbon-containing fuels including coal, wood, charcoal, natural gas, and fuel oil. It can be emitted by combustion sources such as unvented kerosene and gas space heaters, furnaces, woodstoves, gas stoves, fireplaces and water heaters, automobile exhaust from attached garages, and tobacco smoke. Problems can arise as a result of improper installation, maintenance, or inadequate ventilation. \
\
The radiation dosimeter will utilized to detect Gamma and X-ray radiation on incident scenes.\
\
If a person is exposed to small amounts of radiation over a long time, it raises the risk of cancer. It can also cause mutations in the persons genes, which could be passed on to any children the person may have after the exposure. A lot of radiation over a short period can cause burns or radiation sickness. Symptoms of radiation sickness include nausea, weakness, hair loss, skin burns and reduced organ function. If the exposure is large enough, it can cause premature aging or even death. \
\
Both detectors will be carried on Ambulance 4-9.\
\
We would like to thank the Lancaster County Emergency Medical Services Council and the South Central Pennsylvania Counter-Terrorism Task Force for this life saving equipment.
