Horse struck by Tractor-Trailer in Spring Garden

At 8PM on Tuesday, September 23, Ambulance 4-9 and Engine 4-9-1 were dispatched to the 5200 block of Old Philadelphia Pike in the Spring Garden section of Salisbury Township for a vehicle accident involving a tractor trailer and a horse. \

Lieutenant 4-9 (Steinmetz) was traveling through the area and came upon the accident moments after it happened. Lieutenant Steinmetz notified Lancaster County 911 of the situation by radio and requested the response of Ambulance 4-9 and Engine 4-9-1 to the scene. Upon arrival of the responding units, the ambulance crew checked the driver of the truck who was fortunately not injured, and refused transport to a hospital. The horse was killed on impact.\

After investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police, the horse was removed to a neighboring farm. A tow truck arrived on the scene to remove the damaged truck from the scene. Engine 4-9-1’s crew then deployed the front handline off the engine to wash fluids from the horse off the roadway.\

The final 4-9 units cleared the scene at 9:33 PM\
