At 9:48 PM on Thursday, May 24th, Engine 4-9-1, Christiana Ambulance 5-2-1, and Ephrata Hospital Medic 3 were dispatched to the 5500 block of Old Philadelphia Pike in White Horse for an accident involving a motorcycle and horse. Ambulance 5-2-1 was covering Ambulance 4-9 which was already on a medical call on Narvon Road in Salisbury Township.\

The horse had escaped from her paddock in the neighborhood and was struck by the motorcyclist as she stood in the eastbound lane of Old Philadelphia Pike. The motorcyclist laid the bike on to its left side, ending up in the westbound lane. Engine 4-9-1 made the response at 9:50, and arrived on the scene at 9:52. Medic 3 was cancelled by Command 4-9 at 9:54 when it was deemed by EMT’s that Advanced Life Support services were not needed , and Ambulance 5-2-1 was instructed to respond in at a reduced rate for to examine the motorcyclist who fortunately, had received minor injuries. Ambulance 5-2-1 arrived on the scene at 10:05 and examined the motorcyclist, who declined transport to a hospital.\

Unfortunately, the horse had received an open fracture on her left rear leg in the accident, and a veterinarian from Black Horse Veterinary Clinic was summoned to the scene. The injuries to the horse were too severe, and the decision was made to euthanize the horse on the scene to end her suffering. After she was euthanized, she then was removed to a neighboring farm.\

Ambulance 5-2-1 cleared the scene at 10:42, and Engine 4-9-1 cleared the scene at 10:44. \
The Pennsylvania State Police investigated the incident.\
