14 White Horse EMT’s participate in Prehospital Trauma Life Support Class held at Station 4-9

On the evenings of Wednesday, November 14th and Friday, November 16th, and all day Saturday, November 17th, fourteen Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT’s) from White Horse took part in a Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) class that was held at Station 4-9. Our instructors were all paramedics from Susquehanna Valley EMS (Station 7-7).\
\
Wednesday evening was classroom time, Friday and Saturday both were split between lectures and hands-on training, with the written and practical examinations on Saturday.\
\
The PHTLS course is a 16 hour continuing education class created to give additional training in the handling of trauma patients to EMS providers. The class increases knowledge and enhances skills in delivering emergency medical care to the traumatically injured before being treated in the emergency department at a hospital.\
\
Traumatic injuries, defined as those that are severe or life-threatening, include but are not limited to: gunshots, burns, lacerations and stabbings, assaults, drowning and injuries from auto accidents. Studies show that trauma is among the five leading causes of death in the United States.\
\
Thank You to Susquehanna Valley EMS and their instructors for coming out and teaching us this very important and worthwhile class, and a Special Thank You to the Salisbury Township Board of Supervisors for allowing us to hold our Saturday class and testing in the Salisbury Township Municipal Office Building, due to a large banquet hall rental that was being setup in the fire station at the same time as the PHTLS class was being held.\
