By Firefighter/EMT Christopher Eno
June 30, 2016

The Officers and Members of the White Horse Fire Company wish to extend our deepest condolences to our friends and neighbors at the Gap Fire Company (Station 42) on the passing of Past Fire Chief Joseph C. Norris Jr.

Joe was known as one of Lancaster County's "Super Chiefs", along with Claude Young at Rothsville, Lloyd Henry at Lampeter, Grant Trout at Kinzers, and Ross Parmer here at White Horse, among others. Men whom each served thier companies as Fire Chief for decades, and when their time is put together, served Lancaster County for centuries.

I personally will always hold a fondness for Joe. Very approachable on and off the firegrounds, and always willing to teach a younger fireman.

Chief Norris obituary:
"Joseph C. Norris, Jr., age 83, formerly of Gap, passed away at the Quarryville Retirement Comm-unity on Wednesday, June 29, 2016.

He was the husband of Minerva K. "Minnie" Norris who died in 2008. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Joseph C. Sr. and Marie C. Ammon Norris.

Joe was a graduate of the former Gap Centralized School and earned a 2 year degree from Lancaster Consolidated School of Business. He served his country during the Korean Conflict and was in the Drum and Bugle Corps. He was a member of St John's Episcopal Church, Compass where he served on numerous committees and boards as well as treasurer. He owned and operated Antiques and Old Stuff, later named NN Sales along Route 41 in Gap. He had also worked as the office manager for W.S. Horst Plumbing and Heating in Gap.

Joe loved his community and was involved with the Salisbury Lions Club, Christiana Masonic Lodge, Reading Consistory, Rough & Tumble in Paradise, Gap VFW, and Gap Fire Company serving as Fire Chief for 38 years and was President of the Fire Chiefs Association. He enjoyed antiques and the outdoors whether turkey hunting, fishing or just being with family in the mountain cabin in Sullivan County.

He is survived by 2 children: Michael J. husband of Rose Davis Norris of New Albany, PA, Debra J. wife of Glenn Martin of Kinzers, 1 grandson, 3 step-grandchildren, and 6 step-great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will take place from the St. John's Episcopal Church, 1520 West Kings Highway, Gap, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 2. Rev. Dr. Maryanne Mertz will be officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery. There will be a viewing on Friday, July 1st at Shivery Funeral Home, 111 Elizabeth Street, Christiana, from 6 to 8 p.m. and again at the church from 10 a.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers Gap Fire Company, P.O. Box 487, Gap, PA 17527. shiveryfuneralhome.com"

Rest In Peace, Chief....you will be missed!
